Tax Credit
  How Does the Program Work?
In an effort to reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides a tax credit to help offset the costs of energy efficiency improvements in your home. Key details include:
Tax credits apply to a variety of products including doors, windows, heating & cooling equipment, installation costs, and more.
The credit amount is = to 30% of the installed cost of qualifying products, up to a total amount of $1,500.
Congress extended this provision for 2012 with some modifications to eligibility requirements, and reductions in the cap to $300 per home. The $300 limit applies to heating and cooling equipment and to building envelope improvements, and applies to all years – if you received a credit in 2011 of $300 or more, you cannot receive it again in 2012. In addition, there are some instances where there is a cap on a specific product, see equipment descriptions below for details.
  Economic Advantage
Many homeowners are excited about this program because tax credits, unlike deductions, are subtracted directly from the total amount you owe on your personal income taxes. For example, if you complete your tax return and calculate that you owe the IRS $3,000, a tax credit of $300 will reduce your tax bill to only $2,500. Check with your tax adviser on specific information relating to tax credits.
  Tax Credits for 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012
To take advantage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 tax credits, you must purchase your qualifying high-efficiency comfort system between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2012. Your savings won't be limited to a one-time tax credit. You will continue to save money each month as your new high-efficiency systems reduce your monthly energy bills.
